Joe Grice is the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Chief Economist and Director responsible for economic, labour market and social analysis. He is also the champion at Director level for ONS's corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Most of his career has been at HM Treasury. His last two posts there were as Director of Macroeconomic Policy until 2000 and then as Chief Economist and Director of Public Services until December 2003.

In January 2004, he was seconded to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to lead the team supporting Sir Tony Atkinson's review of the measurement of public services output and productivity. After the review was completed in January 2005, Joe was appointed as the first Executive Director of the UK Centre for the Measurement of Government Activity (UKCeMGA), responsible for progressing the agenda which the Atkinson Review defined.

In May 2006, following a reorganisation within ONS, he became the Executive Director responsible for ONS's social and public service analysis and reporting, including UKCeMGA's work. From November 2008, he also assumed responsibility for ONS's economic statistics and national accounts, heading the new Economic, Labour Market and Social Analysis directorate.

Joe was President of the European Union Economic Policy Committee, between 2005 and 2007, one of two committees which prepares the agenda for the Council of Economic and Finance Ministers (ECOFIN), of which he was an ex officio member. He remains chairman of WP1, the OECD's main economic committee.
