Arrangements for pre release access to the March 2009 Retail Prices Index (RPI) / Consumer Prices Index (CPI) for Her Majesty's Treasury

In accordance with the authority vested in me by Principle 5 of the Pre-release Access to Official Statistics Order 2008 which came into force on 1 December, and with respect to statistics provided to Her Majesty's Treasury, I have granted an exception to the restriction in the Order which limits pre-release access for Ministers and their close briefing officials to a maximum of 24 hours.

I have agreed an extension to the pre release access to the March 2009 RPI / CPI figures due to be published on 21 April.  The figures will be provided to Her Majesty's Treasury at 5pm on 17 April.  The earlier access will enable the March RPI / CPI to be taken into account in preparation of the Budget Statement to be made on 22 April and for the figures to be included in Budget reports. 

As well as placing this notification on the ONS website, I have also written to Sir Michael Scholar, the Chair of the UK Statistics Authority, explaining the reason for my decision.
