The 2011 Census: initial view on content for England and Wales

2011 Census Consultation Roadshow meetings were held between 14 June and 6 July 2005 in Harrogate, Crewe, London, Northampton, Newcastle and Cardiff. Over 300 people attended, representing a wide range of users from local authorities, Government departments, devolved administrations and other interest groups.

Feedback was positive and indicated that the Roadshow was worthwhile and users appreciated the opportunity to get involved at an early stage.

Main findings from the events were:

  • the consultation document did not meet all of some users needs;

  • users support the proposed collection of information about visitors and second residences;

  • more questions are needed on the questionnaire to meet the requirements of some users;

  • there was continuing interest in the topics previously covered in the 2001 Census.

These findings were considered by the 2011 Census Topics Team, and the outcome of the consultation published in a report in March 2006. These results will inform the design of the 2007 Census Test questionnaire.
