Samples of Anonymised Records User Meeting, 16 November 2006

2006 SARs User Group Meeting

16 November 2006, Royal Statistical Society, London

This meeting was jointly hosted by the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR) and the Office for National Statistics.

Five academic researchers took the opportunity to give presentations on their findings on a range of topics:

Changing patterns of ethnic minority self-employment in the UK

Are ethnic penalties in the labour market reduced for the generations born in the UK?

Employment patterns of ethnic women

Why are boy babies less religious than girl babies?

The research potential of the Small Area Microdata

The presentations can be found on the CCSR website. All these research projects needed access to Census microdata; none could have been achieved by using the standard Census tables or commissioned Census output.

Two presentations were given by ONS Census division. These covered the UK Census Office's plans for the 2011 Census, issues for microdata, the statistical disclosure policy and approach for 2011 Census outputs.

Throughout the event a lot of positive feedback was received on all the SARs products. The day concluded with a panel discussion where the delegates were given the opportunity to inform CCSR and the Census organisations of the most important aspects that they would like taken into consideration when specifying, designing and delivering the 2011 Census microdata. These will be taken forward in discussions on the development of 2011 Census microdata at the SARs Project Board, the first meeting of which is proposed for spring/summer 2007
