Improving Migration and Population Statistics project - Involving Local Authorities
Congress Centre, London, 29 November 2005
The Improving Migration and Population Statistics Project (IMPS) workshop provided an overview of the IMPS project, the research carried out to date by ONS and the opportunity to share ideas about how we can move towards improved population statistics in the future.
The workshop explored how local data and knowledge are used by Local Authorities and how this can feed into research being carried out by ONS. We considered whether and how data sources held at local level might be used within the current methodology to produce and/or to quality assure the population estimates.
A particular focus of the workshop was to identify and better understand the difficulties in measuring particular population groups, for example students, migrants and armed forces personnel, and how to improve the current methods used to estimate them. We also looked at different types of LAs and discussed whether there are specific issues which relate to them and how these might be taken into account in our research.
We aimed to gain a mutual understanding of the research being undertaken by both the IMPS project and the LAs.
