Consultation on Population Based Health-Related Surveys

The Information Centre for Health and Social Care is reviewing its Population Based Health-Related Surveys which cover a diverse range of topics such as smoking, drinking, obesity, mental health and cardio-vascular disease. The following surveys are included

  • Health Survey for England (HSE)
  • mental and dental health surveys
  • infant feeding and maternity surveys
  • certain questions in the Office for National Statistics (ONS) General Household Survey (GHS)


The aim is to improve the relevance of the data collected. The proposal is to replace the Health Survey for England and some questions in the other surveys with a new health and social care survey. We believe that this new survey can make significant improvements, such as

  • making best use of new developments in patient records in primary and secondary care
  • recognising the increasing importance of devolved funding and commissioning
  • responding more effectively to the social care agenda changes to the delivery and policy implementation frameworks
