Quality information for economic, social and business statistics

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is committed to providing users with ways to assess whether official statistics are suitable for use. The National Statistics Code of Practice states that 'knowledge of National Statistics will be sustained by quality measures, regularly published.'

The full programme of quality work can be viewed on the Statistical Quality pages. The programme is consistent with the Eurostat approach, whose work is explained on the Eurostat website.

Publishing Quality Information for National Accounts Outputs introduces the project on producing quality reports for economic statistics.

Quality reports for economic, social and business statistics

There are currently two types of quality reports being rolled out across economic statistics for external users: 'Basic Quality Information' and 'Summary Quality Reports'.

Basic Quality Information is published as background notes in the first release of key outputs. The information is specific to the release and details quality issues along with dynamic, quantitative quality measures.

Summary Quality Reports are overview notes not specific to releases. They pull together qualitative information on the six Eurostat criteria of quality: relevance, accuracy, timeliness and punctuality, accessibility and clarity, comparability and coherence. They also provide a summary of methods used to compile outputs and describe the methods' impact on the quality of estimates produced.
