Improvements to the mid-2008 population estimates

The ONS Centre for Demography (ONSCD) is developing a package of improvements to the methodology used for calculating population estimates. The improvements impact on previously published population estimates leading to revisions to data, including revised mid-2002 to mid-2008 local authority population estimates to be published in May 2010. These improvements will feed into the 2008-based Subnational Population Projections, which will also be published in May 2010.

As part of the quality assurance process for these improvements, ONSCD is undertaking an exercise seeking users' views on the impact of the improvements to the local authority population estimates developed so far. This exercise runs from 30 November 2009 to 18 January 2010. Further information on this user engagement can be found in the links below.

To support this user engagement the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is holding a series of joint roadshows in December 2009 to communicate the latest work being carried out to improve population statistics through the 2011 Census and the Improving Migration and Population Statistics projects. Further details of these seminars can be found through the link to the right of this page.

ONS is also concurrently undertaking its normal biennial consultation, with local authorities and primary care organisations, on the migration assumptions used in the Subnational Population Projections. Further details on this consultation can be found through the link to the right of this page.
