UK Statistical Geographies Database

The UK Statistical Geographies Database provides a consistent knowledge base of the range of statistical geographies which are used across National Statistics. It aims to help control the process of creating new statistical geographies, improve the quality of geographic information data flows, and act as a useful reference tool. The database is released in April and October each year.

It should be noted that not all geographies included in the database are supported by the Office for National Statistics.

From 2011 onwards the new GSS Coding and Naming policy for some statistical geographies will be implemented. From this date, where new codes have been allocated they should be used in all exchanges of statistics and published outputs that normally include codes.

The Code History Database (CHD) provides multiple functionality including details of all codes, relationships, hierarchies and archived data. Initially, the CHD will be used in parallel with the UK Statistical Geographies database, the Standard Names and Codes (SNAC) database and the Ward History database.

These products are under review but it is likely that the Ward History Database will be discontinued and remain as a frozen, historical document. Condensed versions of SNAC and the UK Statistical Geographies Database may continue to be produced to include frozen geographies and others not included in the CHD.

Please see the Related Links section for more information regarding the Code History Database.
