The first Geography Users Group meeting took place on 21 September 2009. This meeting informed users about many of the geographic products and services available, changes in geographies and new developments and policies.
            
The new GSS Coding and Naming policy to be implemented on 1 January 2011 was of great interest.  From this date new codes should be used in all exchanges of statistics and published outputs that normally include codes.

ONS Geography (ONSG) will maintain a UK Register of Geographic Codes (RGC) and coordinate the issue of new codes, working closely with owners. ONSG will also maintain the Code History Database (CHD) that will include details of all codes, relationships, hierarchies and archived data. 

ONSG is very keen to provide support, demonstrate the RGC and CHD tools and discuss the new policy with any areas that produce, publish or access geography-based statistical data.
