About the Allsopp Programme

Implementation of the recommendations outlined in the Allsopp Review

The Allsopp review of statistics for monetary and wider economic policymaking published its Final Report on 31 March 2004. The Review’s remit had two parts:

  • to examine the provision of data required for regional economic policy making

  • to assess how well the provision of economic statistics captures structural change in the economy

The Review put forward recommendations for improving the provision of economic statistics. Overall, they point to two main changes in the statistical system in the UK:

  • the pressing need for better regional data should be satisfied, including development of a production-based measure of Regional Gross Value Added (GVA) in real terms

  • core data systems, especially those for producing National Accounts, need to be re-balanced to provide better detail and coverage of the service sectors

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) welcomed the strategic direction provided by the Review for the development of economic statistics.

ONS's commitment to implementing the recommendations was demonstrated by the creation of a dedicated team and programme, the results of which can be found in the progress to date page.
